Our Design Philosophy

At Church and Mill, we believe that every space has a story to tell.

Our design philosophy centers around creating environments that reflect your unique personality and lifestyle while ensuring functionality and comfort.

OUR PROCESS

  • Meet & Agree
  • Idea & Concept
  • Design & Create
  • Build & Install

This is where the collaboration begins. We sit down to understand your lifestyle, preferences, goals, and budget—building trust and creating a shared vision. It’s about more than just a meeting. It’s the foundation of a partnership where we begin to uncover what makes your space truly yours.

“We believe the best design starts by listening. That’s how we make spaces that feel like home.”

Once we’re aligned, the design dialogue begins. Our team of four designers—each with a distinct voice—comes together to brainstorm bold ideas grounded in your personal story. We draw inspiration from how you live, what you love, and the atmosphere you want to create.

“No two people are alike—and neither are the spaces we design.”

Here’s where vision becomes visual. We shape and refine your design through a spirited, collaborative process. We push, challenge, and inspire one another to ensure the end result is not only functional, but emotionally resonant. Think of this as crafting your family’s visual biography.

“It’s not about trends. It’s about truth—your truth in every detail.”

With a design you love, we move into action. From a powder room refresh to a full-scale renovation, we manage every element of execution with care. The process is tailored to your timeline and your life, ensuring installation feels as seamless as the end result is stunning.

“From concept to completion, we handle the details so you can enjoy the transformation.”

OUR TEAM

Jill Rakicsany

Founder and Creative Director

Jill has been imagining better rooms for as long as she can remember. What started as a childhood fascination with beautiful spaces turned into a lifelong pursuit of meaningful, well-lived design. Her path has taken her around the world—from studying architecture and design abroad to soaking in the subtle ways environments shape how we feel, live, learn and connect. She believes in the quiet power of good design to transform not just homes, but lives.

A native Washingtonian, Jill moved to Vienna in 2008, where she now lives with her husband, three children, and their endlessly entertaining Boston Terrier, Frank. She founded Church and Mill as a design studio and boutique for those who care deeply about their surroundings — a place where curated objects, layered interiors, and timeless design come together. She also envisioned it as a platform for local artists and makers — a space where they can showcase their work, share their craft, and connect with others through exhibitions, workshops, and community events. With a sharp eye and a relaxed approach, Jill helps her clients create homes that are both elevated and entirely livable.

Katelyn Rehmann

Senior Designer

Katelyn has been an integral part of Church & Mill since its founding in Vienna, Virginia. With a wealth of experience in the design industry, she brings an entrepreneurial spirit to the studio—helping shape its growth through creative vision, strategic insight, and a strong sense of collaboration.

Known for creating spaces that strike the perfect balance between beauty and function—Katelyn designs spaces that are not only timeless and textured but also truly livable. Whether it’s a quiet reading nook or a family gathering space, she believes great design should make everyday life feel a little more special. As a senior designer, she’s all in with every client—listening closely, designing thoughtfully, and always aiming to create homes that reflect the people who live in them.

When she’s not designing, you’ll find Katelyn spending time with her husband, Quinn, traveling, relaxing by the water, or walking their chocolate lab, Brooks.

Charene Potts

Designer

Charene’s style is largely influenced by her childhood growing up in Jamaica and St. Vincent & the Grenadines, however, her intense love for design, and all the creative wonders it can bring to an otherwise ordinary space, began on a visit to an estate home on the island of Mustique in which the living room was built around a large boulder found on site. Her diverse aesthetic deepened as she traveled throughout the Caribbean, the US, and especially during her studies and time living in France.

With a background in education and degrees in Broadcast Journalism, Romance Languages, and French Literature, Charene later formalized her passion for interiors with an A.S. in Interior Design.

Now based in Vienna, VA with her husband and three children, Charene is thrilled to bring her experiences and perspective to the Church & Mill team. Charene enjoys creating stylish and functional spaces that reflect her clients’ unique story. She loves getting to know people and brings an infectious warmth and enthusiasm to her work. When she isn’t in the studio or taking care of her family, you can find her in the garden, traveling, volunteering at Green Hedges School or on long walks around the Town of Vienna with her dog, Pepper.

Tine Michelsen

Designer

Tine (known as Tina) relocated to Vienna from Denmark in August 2022 with her husband and youngest son. She previously worked as a Production Manager in the Graphics Department of a media company, overseeing the production of newspapers, magazines, digital ads, and custom-designed products. Alongside her corporate career, Tine has been steadily building her interior design practice—an interest rooted in her family’s legacy, as both her grandfather and uncle were notable architects in Denmark. Over the years, she has worked on a range of residential projects, from concept development to spatial planning and styling, for both private clients and design collaborations.

Tine’s design style draws from Scandinavian principles—simplicity, light, elegance, and functionality—while also embracing a refined mix of old and new. She values the Danish concept of “hygge,” or creating warmth and comfort in the home, and enjoys weaving this spirit into her interiors. Her goal is to craft inviting, personalized spaces that reflect each client’s lifestyle while remaining timeless and beautiful.
